Here is a great song to practice flams. Remember to play true down strokes and up strokes. Don’t let the sticks “pop” Don’t anticipate the flam by lifting your sticks before you play. Try to be machine like in your motion. Start slow by playing flams on beats 2 and 4.
This is a from a Broadway show called Blast! It features the talents of people who have “aged out” of competitive drum and bugle corps. This clip features players on high tension snare drums. Notice how the lugs connect the two rims together. This allows for extreme tension on the snare head which produces the distinctive crisp sound.
